MAF Holds Another Successful Campaign
From The Winged M issue of October 2006
Multnomah Athletic Foundation reported the commencement of its annual fund campaign in the July issue of The WingedM. Since July, a significant number of club members have contributed to the foundation. As this article goes to press, approximately $90,000 has been drawn from the total contribution pool for foundation purposes.
As the foundation has previously reported, all of its scholarship and program support is not fully endowed, which means the annual fund campaign fulfills vital role enabling complete funding of the foundation's annual mission.
The foundation has assumed the funding liability for the club's Scholar Athlete program. (The club continues to administer the program and the foundation pays the scholarship awards). This cooperative effort has worked well; it is a win-win situation for both organizations and the 27 Scholar Athlete recipients from area high schools.
MAF's funding responsibility for this program is substantial because it must carry as a liability on its books multiple years of scholarship commitment. Scholarship awards are made through the program when the scholar athlete is a sophomore in high school, which means that the scholarship promise is outstanding for two years, resulting in a total liability of $54,000.
Club members will be happy to know that their contributions are allocated not only to the Scholar Athlete program but also to the various foundation endowment funds administered through the Oregon Community Foundation (OCF). MAF's investment committee makes the decision on allocation from among the following:
- The Fay Sasser Scholarship Fund, which provides academic scholarships for eligible family members of MAC employees;
- The Joe Loprinzi Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for area high school graduates;
- The General Endowment Fund, which covers the foundation's annual expenses as well as various program and individual sponsorships for the 2006-2007 operating period;
- The James F. and Marion Miller Scholar Athlete Fund, which is the endowment fund intended to ultimately endow the annual MAC Scholar Athlete program;
- The Mel Fox Memorial Fund, which endows a scholarship to a graduating senior at Franklin High School; and
- The Lorraine Miller Trustee Endowment Fund, which continues to be funded for an ultimate targeted endowment of $100,000 principal, at which time it will provide support for various charitable purposes, including scholarship support.
Individual club members may also contribute funds to the foundation to support their own personal endowment. For example, the Earl and Barbara Repp Memorial Fund is an endowment fund with the foundation, managed by OCF.
The Multnomah Athletic Foundation is grateful to the many club members who have participated in the annual fund campaign. For more information on MAF, call 503-517-2350 or go to themac.com.
